Senator Shaheen Discusses NATO Summit Takeaways at World Affairs Council of New Hampshire

(Washington, DC) – This morning, U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), co-chair of the U.S. Senate NATO Observer Group, joined World Affairs Council of New Hampshire Executive Director Tim Horgan for a fireside chat to discuss takeaways and accomplishments from this week’s NATO Summit in Washington D.C. The conversation focused on the Summit's outcomes, global stability, our continued relationships with our Allies and Ukraine’s path to NATO membership. You can find photos from the event here or watch the full discussion in here.

Key quotes from Senator Shaheen:

  • “The Summit was very successful. What we saw and what we heard was that NATO has an irreversible commitment to Ukraine, at the end of the conflict with Russia, to join NATO.”

  • “I co-sponsored legislation in the United States called the Women Peace and Security Act, which recognizes the role that women play in conflict areas. As we look at the number of women in Ukraine who are participating both actively in the military and in so many other roles as a result of this war, it's important to see that agenda continue to be supported. The NATO Summit approved a plan for fully integrating women, peace and security into NATO which they've been working on for a number of years.”

  • “NATO is in our interest, and if we don't stop Putin, if we don’t send a clear message to the dictators who are a threat to democracies around the world that we're going to be united, that we're going to stand with our allies and do what we promised, then they are enabled to do what they want to do with other countries. And that ultimately is going to touch the United States. There's a very direct correlation between ensuring that our defense can help us deter those threats, and that's why the 2% is so important.”

Throughout the NATO Summit, Senator Shaheen participated in high-level meetings, briefings and events with world leaders, including a meeting with President Zelenskyy, a roundtable with leaders from Albania, North Macedonia and Montenegro, an event with Secretary Blinken on Women, Peace and Security and a panel discussion during the NATO Public Diplomacy Forum with Senator Tillis (R-NC). Earlier this week, Senator Shaheen introduced a bipartisan, bicameral bill to award the Congressional Gold Medal to NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg for his decade of service to NATO.
