Shaheen Joins Ribbon Cutting for Resident Owned Housing in Derry, Delivers Remarks at Grand Opening of Novocure Facility in Portsmouth

(Portsmouth, NH) – Today, U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) joined residents of Derry Oak Village Cooperative and members of the New Hampshire Community Loan Fund (CLF) for a ribbon cutting ceremony in Derry to celebrate New Hampshire 150th Resident-Owned Community. Shaheen has led efforts in Congress to support manufactured housing communities and make housing more affordable. She later joined members of New Hampshire’s Congressional delegation, business leaders and Portsmouth community members for the opening of Novocure’s North American flagship facility that will house a world-class training and development center and bring physicians and scientists from around the world to New Hampshire. “Housing is foundational to success for New Hampshire’s economy and its people. Without it, it’s hard to stay healthy, keep a good job, do well in school and so much more,” said Shaheen. “We need to do all we can to preserve the affordable housing we have now, and resident-owned communities like Derry Oak Village Cooperative are helping to do just that. New Hampshire has led the way in the resident-owned community movement for forty years and I hope residents of other states can benefit from its success.”

Senator Shaheen is a leader in the Senate working to combat housing instability, including by securing federal investments in New Hampshire’s many manufactured housing communities. In June, Shaheen reintroduced the Manufactured Housing Community Sustainability Act which would encourage manufactured home park owners interested in selling the community to sell the land to their residents, rather than another landlord or a developer. Earlier this year, Shaheen applauded action by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to help preserve and revitalize manufactured housing with the launch of the Preservation and Reinvestment Initiative for Community Enhancement (PRICE). Shaheen helped introduce legislation to make the PRICE program permanent and supported $225 million for PRICE in the Fiscal Year 2023 funding bill. Shaheen has also introduced the Fighting Homelessness Through Services and Housing Act to help local governments reduce homelessness as well as a bicameral bill that would protect the rights of residents of manufactured housing communities.

In Portsmouth, Shaheen delivered remarks at the ribbon cutting of Novocure’s new North American flagship facility in downtown Portsmouth.

“By creating more than 200 high paying jobs, opening a training center and bringing in world-class scientists and physicians, Novocure is helping lead the effort to make New Hampshire a life sciences hub,” said Shaheen. “Novocure’s new facility is a long-term investment in the Portsmouth community that will fuel growth and innovation in our state for years to come.”

Novocure is a global oncology company working to extend survival in some of the most aggressive forms of cancer through innovative therapy. The new facility will house a world-class training and development center, bringing physicians and scientists from around the world to New Hampshire and creating hundreds of high paying jobs in the state.
