Shaheen Responds to Supreme Court Ruling on Mifepristone
(Washington, DC) – U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) issued the following statement after the Supreme Court unanimously rejected the challenge that would have restricted access to mifepristone:
“While I’m relieved that today’s ruling will ensure mifepristone—an FDA-approved medication—will continue to be available for women across the country, make no mistake: this fight isn’t over. The Supreme Court rejected this challenge based on legal standing, which opens the door to possible future lawsuits that could result in limiting access to mifepristone and could deal yet another blow to women’s reproductive freedom and bodily autonomy. The opinions of GOP lawmakers and extreme jurists have no place in dictating women’s ability to access the reproductive care they need. I’ll never stop fighting to protect women’s fundamental right to make their own decisions about their reproductive health care,” said Shaheen.
For decades, Shaheen has fought to expand coverage of women’s reproductive health. As Governor, she repealed outdated, dangerous laws that would have made abortion a felony in the state of New Hampshire. Last year, she introduced a resolution in support of equitable, science-based policies governing access to medication abortion.
She successfully pushed an effort through Congress to ensure servicewomen have access to abortions in cases of rape or incest. Shaheen also leads policy priorities that invest in preventative care, including through her legislation, to bring the cost of contraception for servicewomen and dependents in military families in line with coverage of the civilians they’re sworn to protect.
In the wake of the Dobbs decision, Senator Shaheen authored an op-ed underscoring the threats to women’s freedoms and rights in a post-Roe America. Last year, Shaheen led a letter to Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin, underscoring the serious national security imperatives tied to providing U.S. service members access to protected leave for abortion and reproductive health services. She leads new legislation that would codify the Pentagon’s policy to provide protected leave for abortions and reproductive medical care. Senators Shaheen and Hassan are leaders in the fight to protect Title X family planning centers.
