Shaheen Statement Following Meeting with Secretary of State Nominee Senator Rubio

(Washington, DC) – U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), a senior member of the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee, today issued the following statement after meeting with Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL), President-elect Donald Trump’s nominee to serve as Secretary of State. A photo from the meeting can be found here.

“Today’s meeting with Senator Rubio provided a valuable opportunity to discuss some of the many global challenges facing our nation, including combatting the economic and security challenges posed by the People’s Republic of China and Russia, continuing to sustain bipartisan support for Ukraine amid Russia’s unprovoked invasion and addressing the conflicts across the Middle East, most recently following the fall of former Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad. We also discussed the importance of sustaining current U.S. policy toward Georgia, strengthening U.S. economic competitiveness overseas and making sure positions around the globe are filled by qualified career diplomats as soon as possible. Senator Rubio and I have worked together for years as members of the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and I look forward to continuing to discuss these issues further in his confirmation hearing.”
