Shaheen Statement on 2023 Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Economic Impact Report

(Washington, DC) – U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), a senior member of the U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee and Appropriations Defense Subcommittee, issued the following statement in response to the release of the Seacoast Shipyard Association’s Annual Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Economic Impact Report for 2023:

“This year’s report reaffirms what we already know to be true—the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard is a fundamental asset to the Seacoast community. The Shipyard’s workforce is a point of pride for New Hampshire and continues to bolster our country’s national defense while contributing to economic growth,” said Shaheen. “It’s clear that investments in modernizing the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard greatly benefit Granite Staters and our nation. As Congress works toward finalizing annual defense and government funding legislation for the upcoming fiscal year, I will continue to fight for measures that support the Shipyard and its first-rate workforce.”

As a co-chair of the U.S. Senate Navy Caucus and a senior member of the Appropriations Defense Subcommittee and U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee, Senator Shaheen is New Hampshire’s strongest advocate for the shipyard and Navy shipbuilding programs. In the Committee-passed National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for FY 2025, Shaheen secured funding for the Shipyard and the Shipbuilding Industrial Base. The bill fully funds the Shipyard Infrastructure Optimization Plan (SIOP), including the funding needed to complete dry dock projects at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. The bill also includes $795 million for the SIOP above the President’s Budget, which will help to increase submarine maintenance availability at Portsmouth and across the country. Shaheen has a long legacy of securing the authorization and funding necessary to complete the Shipyard’s Multi-Mission Dry Dock Expansion.
