Shaheen Statement on One Year Since Hamas’ Attack on Israel

(Washington, DC) – U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), a senior member of the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations and Armed Services Committees, issued the following statement on the one-year mark of the brutal terrorist attack by Hamas on Israel that killed 1,200 people and took hundreds hostage:

“One year ago, the world watched in horror as Hamas terrorists flooded into Israel and unleashed a heinous, barbaric attack killing 1,200 and taking hundreds hostage. That day marked the worst terrorist attack in Israel’s history and is a stain upon the world forever. Innocent men, women and children were tortured, mutilated and murdered.

“There are still 101 hostages—including Americans Keith Siegel, Edan Alexander, Sagui Dekel-Chen, Omer Neutra, Itay Chen, Judith Weinstein and Gadi Haggai—being held by terrorists in Gaza. We mourn the loss of Hersh Goldberg-Polin, an Israeli American who was kidnapped on October 7th and murdered just over a month ago. There is no time to waste in getting the hostages out alive and returning the remains of those who have been killed to their families.

“I’ve been clear that Israel has a right to defend its people. It is now time to implement a ceasefire that brings the hostages home and ends the suffering in Gaza, where innocent civilians have been caught in the crossfire. There must be a long-term resolution that provides for the security of the Israeli people and provides Palestinians with self-determination for their own future. A two-state solution is the only path towards achieving security, dignity and safety for all Israelis and Palestinians.”

Shaheen is a strong supporter of Israel and a two-state solution. Through her leadership on the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations, Armed Services and Appropriations Committees, Shaheen has advocated for support for Israel and its people. In response to the horrific terror attack on October 7th, Shaheen swiftly condemned Hamas and called for enduring support for Israel. Shaheen introduced a bipartisan resolution condemning Hamas for using sexual and gender-based violence as a weapon of war against Israelis. She has been a leading voice of support for hostages around the world, including those Americans and Israelis held in Gaza. Shaheen joined letters in support of a strong humanitarian response in Gaza and a pathway to safety for Americans stuck in Gaza. In recent months, she has urged Israel and Hamas to agree to a ceasefire to get the hostages out and humanitarian aid into Gaza.
