Shaheen Visits University of New Hampshire’s Shoals Marine Lab on Appledore Island

(Washington, DC) – Today, U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) met with senior officials from the University of New Hampshire (UNH) to visit Shoals Marine Laboratory on Appledore Island to discuss its role in advancing climate research. While touring Appledore Island, Shaheen learned about the ongoing research into marine and environmental science, as well as the innovative green grid that’s being powered by renewable energy, energy conservation and sustainability efforts. She also visited the historic Celia Thaxter Garden. During her visit, Shaheen marked the one-year anniversary of the Inflation Reduction Act, a landmark law that includes the most extensive climate and clean energy investments in U.S. history.
“I want to thank the staff and students of UNH’s Shoals Marine Laboratory for giving me a tour today, especially as we celebrate the first anniversary of the historic Inflation Reduction Act being signed into law,” said Senator Shaheen. “The cutting-edge renewable energy and microgrid technology on Appledore Island offers a window into what’s possible when we think about a clean energy future. I’m proud of the work that UNH is doing to advance energy and marine research, which brings us closer to our goal of combatting and responding to climate change.”
Senator Shaheen has long worked to secure federal investments in clean energy and energy efficiency initiatives. Shaheen was a key supporter of the historic climate bill – the Inflation Reduction Act – which was signed into law last year and invests resources into climate resiliency efforts. Senator Shaheen was a lead negotiator of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA), which provided a $550 billion investment in our nation’s core infrastructure priorities – including renewable energy and energy efficiency projects. Within the IIJA, Shaheen successfully included key provisions of her energy efficiency bill – the Energy Savings and Industrial Competitiveness Act (ESIC) – with former Senator Rob Portman (R-OH).
